Ceylon Energy Board has decided to start charging social security contribution tax from electricity customers beginning on October 1, 2022.

The CEB’s electricity supply is subject to the Social Security Contribution Tax, according to the Social Security Tax Act and the Public Utilities Commission.

The Public Utility Commission proposed to the Ministry of Finance that the consumption of electricity be excluded from this tax due to the recent revision of electricity tariffs. However, the Ministry of Finance informed the Public Utility Commission that the Ceylon Electricity Board’s electricity supply is subject to this tax under the terms of the relevant act.
