The Department of Met says that there will be occasional rains today in Western, Sabaragamuwa Provinces, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts (3). In some places in Sabaragamuwa Province, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya districts there will be more than 100 mm of heavy rain.
A spokesman for the department also said that there would be some rains in the North and North-West provinces, and in a few places in the Uva province and Ampara district, there will be rain or thunder in the evening or at night. He also mentioned that on the western slopes of the central hills, in the northern, central, and southern provinces, and in the Trincomalee district, strong winds of 50, 55 km per hour will occur from time to time.
The spokesperson further said that people are being notified to take action to reduce the risks as lightning accidents and temporary strong winds can occur along with thunderstorms.
Also, in the sea area from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota, there will be strong winds of 60, 70 km per hour, and there is also a possibility of rising sea waves, so the Department of Meteorology has issued a red notice that fishing and marine activities should not be engaged in those sea areas today (3)
